Interim Cubs hitting coach Rowson to get serious consideration for job in 2013

NEW YORK (MCT) ? Manager Dale Sveum said interim hitting coach James Rowson will get serious consideration for the job in 2013.

?No question about it,? Sveum said. ?Anything like that, it?s labeled interim, but he?s going to be highly considered.?

Rowson replaced Rudy Jaramillo on June 12 when the Cubs had a 20-40 record, becoming their fourth hitting coach since 2009, following Gerald Perry, Von Joshua and Jaramillo.

The Cubs? overall offensive numbers haven?t changed much, despite a 12-12 record since Rowson?s arrival. They were hitting .247 with a .304 on-base percentage and a .385 slugging percentage under Jaramillo, averaging 3.7 runs per game and 0.8 home runs per game.

In 24 games under Rowson, they?re hitting .249 with a .294 on-base percentage and a .387 slugging percentage, averaging 3.7 runs per game and 0.9 home runs per game.

It?s probably going to take a while to see if Rowson has any real effect, or if the talent is just not there. An Internet report last month speculated the Cubs would bring in Red Sox hitting coach Dave Magadan next year, based on his relationship with the Cubs? new regime.

Rowson had been the Cubs? minor league hitting coordinator and knows a lot of the prospects, including Anthony Rizzo. Sveum said Rowson?s knowledge of Rizzo had nothing to do with the decision to promote him though he added his knowledge of the prospects ?helps, no doubt about it.?

?He was here much more before Rizzo, and other than that we?ve had pretty much the same roster,? Sveum said. ?The other guys ? whoever comes up ? obviously James has a background with them and got to see them play a lot more than we (did) in the minor league system.?

Marmol watch: Sveum gave Carlos Marmol a vote of confidence Saturday, saying the closer is not in any danger of losing his job.

Marmol has seven straight saves since his last blown opportunity, but his earned-run average is at 5.61 after Friday?s rough outing, and he has walked 25 batters in 242/3 innings.

Extra innings: Sveum said the rotation after the All-Star break will begin with Ryan Dempster, Paul Maholm and Matt Garza against the Diamondbacks, followed by Travis Wood, Jeff Samardzija and Dempster against the Marlins. ... Rizzo has hit safely in eight straight games.
