Chevy Offers 1.6L Turbo Engine In China-Market Malibu

General Motors is offering a turbocharged 1.6 liter engine on the Chevrolet Malibu in China, apparently in place of the more powerful 2.0 liter turbo unit found in the midsize sedan in nearly all other markets. Unfortunately, the boosted 1.6 doesn?t seem to be the all-new direct-injected 1.6 liter turbo engine that was recently announced as part of GM?s powertrain revitalization strategy.

Instead, this turbo four-banger makes 181 horsepower (135 Kw) and 173 lb.-ft. (235 Nm) of torque ? which puts it right behind the output produced by the outgoing 2.4 liter SIDI LEA four-cylinder. Interestingly, Chevy?s specifications state that the Malibu powered by the 1.6T is faster to 60 MPH than the one cradling the 2.4, but only by 0.3 seconds. Even so, the new 2.5 liter LCV is more powerful than both the 1.6T and 2.4 LEA, but we wonder if the all-new 1.6T will be even more potent than the 2.5.

The turbocharged 1.6 joins the naturally-aspirated 2.0 liter Ecotec, 2.0 liter turbodiesel, and 3.0 liter V6 LFW as the fourth engine not available on the U.S.-spec Malibu.

The GM Authority Take

We couldn?t care less about the mediocre (and hoary) 2.0 Ecotec, similarly unimpressive turbo 1.6, or the 3.0 V6? but we?d love to see the diesel mill offered in the North American-market Malibu. That, and the all-new 1.6 liter will definitely make things interesting when it finally comes to market, possibly making us question the existence of the 2.5 LCV.
