Scientists find missing link between players in the epigenetic code

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? Over the last two decades, scientists have come to understand that the genetic code held within DNA represents only part of the blueprint of life. The rest comes from specific patterns of chemical tags that overlay the DNA structure, determining how tightly the DNA is packaged and how accessible certain genes are to be switched on or off.

As researchers have uncovered more and more of these "epigenetic" tags, they have begun to wonder how they are all connected. Now, research from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine has established the first link between the two most fundamental epigenetic tags -- histone modification and DNA methylation -- in humans.

The study, which was published Sept. 30, 2012 by the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, implicates a protein called UHRF1 in the maintenance of these epigenetic tags. Because the protein has been found to be defective in cancer, the finding could help scientists understand not only how microscopic chemical changes can ultimately affect the epigenetic landscape but also give clues to the underlying causes of disease and cancer.

"There's always been the suspicion that regions marked by DNA methylation might be connected to other epigenetic tags like histone modifications, and that has even been shown to be true in model organisms like fungus and plants," said senior study author Brian Strahl, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry and biophysics in the UNC School of Medicine and a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. "But no one has been able to make that leap in human cells. It's been controversial in terms of whether or not there's really a connection. We have shown there is."

Strahl, along with his postdoctoral fellow Scott Rothbart, honed in on this discovery by using a highly sophisticated technique developed in his lab known as next generation peptide arrays. First the Strahl lab generated specific types of histone modifications and dotted them on tiny glass slides called "arrays." They then used these "arrays" to see how histone modifications affected the docking of different proteins. One protein -- UHRF1 -- stood out because it bound a specific histone modification (lysine 9 methylation on histone H3) in cases where others could not.

Strahl and his colleagues focused the rest of their experiments on understanding the role of UHRF1 binding to this histone modification. They found that while other proteins that dock on this epigenetic tag are ejected during a specific phase of the cell cycle, mitosis, UHRF1 sticks around. Importantly, the protein's association with histones throughout the cell cycle appears to be critical to maintaining another epigenetic tag called DNA methylation. The result was surprising because researchers had previously believed that the maintenance of DNA methylation occurred exclusively during a single step of the cell cycle called DNA replication.

"This role of UHRF1 outside of DNA replication is certainly unexpected, but I think it is just another way of making sure we don't lose information about our epigenetic landscape," said Strahl.

Dolly Parton withdraws from Nashville water park

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Dolly Parton says she won't be involved in a planned water and snow park project in Nashville.

The country legend's withdrawal from the project comes after shareholders for Gaylord Entertainment, voted to reorganize the company as a real estate investment trust. The company was going to be a partner in the venture.

The park was touted as a $50 million venture and was projected to open as early as summer 2014.

Parton said Friday that "Gaylord makes decisions that they feel are good for their company and their stockholders and I have to make decisions based on what is best for me and the Dollywood Company."

Parton's Dollywood theme park and Splash Country water park in eastern Tennessee attract about 4 million visitors a year.

Google gives an easy out, adds YouTube to Takeout data transfer tool

Breaking up with a web-based ecosystem is hard to do, especially when you have several gigabytes of data invested in a specific platform. However, things just got a whole lot easier for disgruntled vloggers. Google recently added YouTube to its Takeout data migration service, which now gives users the ability to pull all of their uploaded videos from the company's servers in a single stroke. This groovy tool should definitely come in handy when you're busy shopping around your latest foreign film to different movie studios. In addition to being extremely easy to use, the service will also send an email letting you know that your download has finished. Simply set it and forget it!

Iran will stop at nothing to protect Syria: Clinton

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Iran has left no doubt that it will do whatever it takes to protect the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Tehran's staunch ally, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Friday.

Clinton also said the United States was offering the Syrian opposition an additional $45 million in non-lethal and humanitarian aid - $30 million for humanitarian assistance and $15 million for non-lethal help, such as radios and training.

"Let's be very frank here - the regime's most important lifeline is Iran. Last week a senior Iranian official publicly acknowledged that members of the Iranian (Islamic) Revolutionary Guard Corps are operating inside Syria," she told a group of foreign ministers at a meeting in New York.

"There is no longer any doubt that Tehran will do whatever it takes to protect its proxy and crony in Damascus," Clinton said. "Iran will do everything it can to evade international sanctions."

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in remarks prepared for delivery at the same meeting of the so-called Friends of Syria - an informal group of countries supporting Assad's ouster - that Paris was increasing its contacts with Syria's armed rebels.

"The process is complex but the Syrian people have been waiting for 18 months for the opposition to succeed to move forward," Fabius said. "It is within this perspective that France has increased its contacts with representatives of the armed opposition."

The 18-month-old uprising against Assad has descended into a civil war and opposition activists estimate more than 30,000 people have been killed.

Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby told the group the situation in Syria was becoming "more explosive."

"We need to start a transitional period," he said. "A transitional period means a change to another regime."

The "Friends of Syria" include the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The group convenes periodically to discuss Syria outside the U.N. Security Council and met on Friday on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly's annual gathering of world leaders.

Survey Says: Wealthy Families Need To Update Their Estate Plans

Images-2A recent survey by Rothstein Kass indicates that many wealthy families who can afford financial offices still have estate plans that are out of date. ?Over 3/4 of the estate plans of the ultra-wealthy clients studied were at least three years old. ?This was the case even though almost 95% of those families have experienced significant life changes since drawing up their estate plans.?

The survey also found that 53% of the wealthy families interviewed did not have formal asset protection plans and 84% of life insurance plans have not been reviewed in over three years.?

Single-family office executives should help clients understand how important it is to review estate plans. Creating the estate plan is just the beginning--maintaining it allows one to take advantage of more benefits.?

See Karen DeMasters, Estate Plans of Rich Families Out of Date, Survey Says, Private Wealth, Sept. 25, 2012.?

Kindle Display vs. Chameleon Skin

Kindle with Cephalopodse-Paper display technology in electronic devices reflects and draws upon the ambient light around you to display multiple colors, contrasts and diffusion in communicate text and images. This technology has been evolving over the past couple of decades.

But biological organisms have been evolving color-changing abilities over millions of years. ?From the chameleon and cuttlefish to the octopus and squid, they have developed for adaptive concealment with camouflage and communication signaling display with warning or mating cues. Could we maybe learn something from them? After all, e-Paper devices lag in optical performance, particularly color generation.

That is why a team of researchers has produced a study aimed at helping biologists who work with these color-changing creatures as well as engineers working with e-Paper technology. The paper, titled ?Biological vs. Electronic Adaptive Coloration: How Can One Inform the Other??, in ?The Journal of The Royal Society Interface?, had three goals, according to Eric Kreit, University of Cincinnati doctoral graduate, ?to allow display engineers to learn from millions of years of natural selection and evolution. To teach biologists the most advanced mechanisms and performance measurements used in human-made reflective e-Paper and to give all scientists a clearer picture of the long-term prospects for capabilities such as adaptive concealment and what can be learned from now you see me, now you don?t mechanisms.?

How Animals and E-Paper are Similar

One of the key findings is that there are various approaches for changing the reflective color of a surface, and that the highest-performance ones developed by both humans and nature share common features. They both use pigments, and they both change or attain color expression by spreading or compacting the pigment. Muscle fiber is used by animals to spread or compact pigment, and electronics use an electric field to.

On the other hand, even if the basic concept for color change is similar, modern technology has never developed anything near the complexity or sophistication of the biology and physics of cephalopod skin. Cephalopods are a varied branch of ocean dwellers and include 700 species of cuttlefish, squid and octopus. They are also the known masters of color change on our planet.

According to Jason Heikenfeld, University of Cincinnati associate professor of electronic and computing systems, ?The highest performance human-made approaches have been only recently developed, well after numerous other approaches were tried.? Perhaps in the past, if we had more closely trusted nature?s ability to find the best solution, we would be further along today in creating better display technology.?

Biological Mastery of Ambient Light

Biological organisms that change color are highly efficient at using ambient light. Just have a look at the chameleon. Either the animal?s skin reflects light to achieve a bright-color effect, or it absorbs light to achieve stunning, multi-colored effects.

In their use of available light, biological organisms are more efficient than electronic devices, which generally require large amounts of electric power to generate an internal or emissive light to generate bright color.

?Cephalopod skin is exquisitely beautiful and radiant, and can be changed in milliseconds, all without generating any intrinsic light from within the skin; there are elegant solutions from biology waiting to be translated to our consumer and industrial world.? Says Roger T. Hanlon, research scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass.

Indeed, overall, animals outperform synthetic devices when it comes to sophistication and integrated systems; required energy use for color change; size scalability (cephalopods? adaptive coloration works over a wide range of sizes in the organisms? class ? from small-size cuttlefish to large-size octopus and squid); and surface texture (cephalopods can selectively adapt or ?crinkle? their skins to match a variety of three-dimensional textures, which provides additional light scattering and shadowing).

Electronics Display Colors Faster and in Wider Ranges

But we?re not completely losing the race. Human-developed technology such as e-Paper and e-Ink is actually far superior to cephalopods or other color-adapting animals in terms of speed. That is to say, human-made electronics can achieve color and a color change faster than the response time of a biological organism.

Not only that, synthetic devices are able to provide a greater range of colors and more efficient dark or black state. A device can achieve a black screen, but most biological organisms cannot achieve such darkened coloring. This is partially due to the fact that an organism such as a marine mammal generally has no reason, in terms of survival adaptation or signaling, to go to a dark or black state. Such an adaptation could even make them more visible, not less, to predators. Nonetheless, there is clearly a lot that engineers can learn from cephalopods and chameleons.

arthurts Site - Bring back your creativity | Self Improvement Tips ...

You need a 7 Day BrainwashI must be honest. There are some days when I sit down to write and I think there?s not a shred of creativity in me. Today, as I began, was one of those days.

So I thought, why don?t I tell them about that? How do you get creative or resourceful when it just doesn?t seem to be there?

Easy peasy, as we used to say at school. (I think we might have added ?lemon squeezy? too ? but who cares?).

I simply remember all the times I have been resourceful. I see myself sitting at my desk writing furiously, wondering how on earth so much time can have passed I?m on such a roll. I recall times when I was teaching, or explaining something passionately to my kids, or when I had to think up a plausible excuse to get myself out of a hole, or when friends dropped in unexpectedly and I concocted a meal out of a larder I had considered empty ?. the number of times any one of us has been creative and resourceful is huge.

Pretty soon, my brain is so full of ideas, I wonder if I can just keep to one a day. My posture changes, I may walk about, my breathing is different.

And you know what? You can do it the other way round too. If I change my posture, my breathing and my movements to the way I am when I feel creative, that old creative feeling comes back all by itself.

New US Formula One circuit gets the nod

Austin, Sep 27

The new Formula one circuit being built here has got the FIA approval for the upcoming United States Grand Prix to be held Nov 18.

The Circuit of The Americas (COTA) in Texas was given the green signal after its final scheduled pre-race inspection by the international automobile federation (FIA) Tuesday.

FIA Race Director Charlie Whiting said he was happy with the construction progress and the overall quality of the circuit.

"The track design is fantastic, the quality of the workmanship is excellent and I have no concerns at all,? said Whiting on the official Formula One website.

?This will be a very unique Grand Prix, a lot of types of corners that will provide a lot of overtaking opportunities."

Whiting?s approval means that COTA will get the ?Grade 1? FIA status it needs to stage a Formula One race.

This will be first Formula One race on American soil since 2007 at Indianapolis.

A final check would be done on the Monday prior to the race.

Elusive element 113 created at last

Scientists in Japan think they've finally created the elusive element 113, one of the missing items on the periodic table of elements.

Element 113 is an atom with 113 protons in its nucleus ? a type of matter that must be created inside a laboratory because it is not found naturally on Earth. Heavier and heavier synthetic elements have been created over the years, with the most massive one being element 118, temporarily named ununoctium.

But element 113 has been stubbornly hard to create. After years of trying, researchers at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science in Japan said Wednesday they finally did so. On Aug. 12, the unstable element was formed and quickly decayed, leaving the team with data to cite as proof of the accomplishment.

"For over nine years, we have been searching for data conclusively identifying element 113, and now that at last we have it, it feels like a great weight has been lifted from our shoulders," Kosuke Morita, leader of the research group, said in a statement. [ Graphic: Nature's Tiniest Particles Explained ]

    1. Take 360-degree tours of the Great Barrier Reef
    2. Vampire squid sucks up garbage, not blood
    3. A clock to keep time after universe dies
    4. Is the uncertainty principle misunderstood?

If confirmed, the achievement will mark the first time Japan has discovered a new element, and should make Japan the first Asian country with naming rights to a member of the periodic table. Until now, only scientists in the United States, Russia and Germany have had that chance.

"I would like to thank all the researchers and staff involved in this momentous result, who persevered with the belief that one day 113 would be ours," Morita said. "For our next challenge, we look to the uncharted territory of element 119 and beyond."

Scientists are continually trying to create bigger and bigger atoms, both for the joy of discovery and for the knowledge these new elements can offer about how atoms work.

Most things in the universe are made of very simple elements, such as hydrogen (which has one proton), carbon (six) and oxygen (eight). For each proton, atoms generally have roughly the same number of neutrons and electrons. Yet the more protons and neutrons that are packed into an atom's nucleus, the more unstable the atom can become. Scientists wonder if there is a limit to how large atoms can be.

The first synthetic element was created in 1940, and so far 20 different elements have been made. All of these are unstable and last only seconds, at most, before breaking apart into smaller elements.

To synthesize element 113, Morita and his team collided zinc nuclei (with 30 protons each) into a thin layer of bismuth (which contains 83 protons). When 113 was created, it quickly decayed by shedding alpha particles, which consist of two protons and two neutrons each. This process happened six times, turning element 113 into element 111, then 109, 107, 105, 103 and finally, element 101, Mendelevium (also a synthetic element).

Morita's group seemed to create element 113 in experiments conducted in 2004 and 2005, but the complete decay chain was not observed, so the discovery couldn't be confirmed. Now that this specific pattern resulting in Mendelevium has been seen, the scientists say it "provides unambiguous proof that element 113 is the origin of the chain."

Harvest Moon by Hand: Favorite Pets

I have been happy to have had a variety of pets as an adult - dogs, cats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, and horses.?Out of all the pets I felt the greatest connection to, though, it had to be Casey.?

Pictures of Casey with Sophia, Olivia, and Montague.

(Collage created on February 14, 2008.)

Casey was ?adopted from a humane society, and was one of several puppies in a litter.?When I went to look at them, she came right to me. I liked the distinctive white mark on her chest. It stood out against her black fur.

For the first few months of her life, she lived in Minneapolis. Then, she became a farm dog. As livestock was added to the farm, she was equally intrigued and amused by the animals - sheep, chickens, turkeys, and horses.

She was an incredibly gentle dog and none of the poultry, lambs, sheep, or horses felt threatened by her. In fact, mother sheep would allow Casey to get close to their newborn lambs.?

When I was offering a children's camp, many of the children who lived in the inner-city were frightened of dogs, particularly large dogs. At 60+ pounds, Casey probably looked very scary to them.

Yet, the children who were fearful of her at the beginning of the camp week, were hugging her when the camp program ended at the end of the week. Truly, she had changed their attitudes and helped them overcome their fear of dogs in only a few days.

Casey died when she was 12 years old from complications of a twisted stomach. Prior to her death, she began having seizures which was frightening to watch. The only thing I could do was comfort her and be there for her when she came out of the seizures.

That is such a short period of her life...and, by thinking about it, I am not remembering the happier times. So, I think about how she and Sydne (and later Montague) would play and "pretend fight" in the backyard. These dogs - who did not know one another - became close companions. They enjoyed going on walks, exploring the backyard, discovering interesting scents that wildlife left on the nature trail, swimming in the river, and sleeping on the bed next to me.

The current dogs here are Montague and Gretel. They are, likewise, a great team. When Montague was grieving the loss of Casey and wouldn't leave the deck...or would look out the window waiting for her...it was clear he needed someone else.

Montague in the pasture.

He and Casey would run in the pasture together.

They would enjoy finding tracks of rabbits and deer; or?

discovering pheasants who would fly out from the tall grass.

(Taken on September 29, 2007.)

Gretel was adopted from a humane society, and became Montague's life line. He was able to move through his grief thanks to Gretel.?

It has been fun to raise a dog from the puppy stage again. (Sydne and Casey were both adopted as puppies while Montague was adopted as a 1 1/2 year old adult dog.) The humane society thought perhaps Gretel was a German Shepherd-Basset Hound mix. As she has grown up, it looks like she is more of a German Shepherd-Coonhound mix.

Gretel listening.?

One of her favorite toys when she was a puppy is nearby.

(Taken on March 28, 2008.)

She has a goofy personality and is very vocal. I've never heard a dog "talk" as much as Gretel does. She also will rub her head on my arms, legs, back, side...wherever she can wedge herself next me. She does this to others in the family as well...not just me. It's as if she wants us to know we're part of her pack and she's part of ours.

In addition to the dogs, I've had six cats since 1990. I also had one shortly after I graduated from college. I didn't have that cat for long due to behavior issues it had.

The six cats I've had came at different times. There have never been more than five cats at one time in the house. Honestly, that's plenty of cats.

That being said, seeing the personalities of each cat develop from being a kitten to cat has been fun. There are cats who enjoy playing and resting next to one another while others prefer to be rest and spend the majority of their day alone.

Meenie, Eenie, and Lucy sitting together.

(Taken on November 17, 2010.)

Each cat has something distinctive about her/him. Maggie, the solitary cat, prefers to rest quietly either on top of the DirecTV box or heating vent in the floor (both nice warm spots). She sits next to me while I eat and will gently put out her claws and tap me if she sees some food of interest. The only other cat that has done that was Boo (who was adopted in Charlotte, North Carolina).

Maggie playing with different items on the nature table.

(Taken on November 22, 2007.)

Shadow wandered onto the farm (just like Lucy and Maggie). However, he spent the majority of the days sitting on the fallen log in the pasture or in the hobby shed. We would put out food for him so he had something to eat, and would feel more comfortable around us.

As the weather became much colder in the winter, he trusted us enough by that time to allow us to bring him indoors.?After the weather warmed, he wanted to go back outside.

Shadow outdoors in the pasture.

(Taken on?November 1, 2008.)

He stayed outdoors until the following fall, and then wanted to come indoors. He has been an indoor cat since that time. Out of all the cats, Shadow has the most mellow and easy-going personality. He gets along with all the cats, especially Eenie and Lucy who enjoy running around the house together and playing.

In July 2009, we adopted a pony and miniature horse from the Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation. Both the pony and horse came from neglect situations, and were quite underweight. Both had not been in pastures - they were in dry lots with limited space to move.

Needless to say, it was a long process to transition their stomachs and bodies from dry alfalfa to pasture grass. To see them at first be confined to the barn and a small area behind the barn - to gradually spending time in the pasture - to seeing them gallop together throughout the pasture has been a joy.

Bailey walking in the pasture through the snow.

She's on the east side of the pond.

(taken on March 27, 2011.)

What makes Bailey and Hoss' relationship special is that we found out (after they were adopted) that Bailey is blind in her right eye. Her left eye has a pigmentation and other vision issue that potentially could render her completely blind.?

Hoss, despite being only about a third of her size and weight, watches out for his companion. He stays next to her when they go out in the pasture together. When he has to stay out of the pasture (so he doesn't over-consume grass and get sick), he keeps a watchful eye on Bailey. When he can't see her, he will call to her to make sure she's okay.?

Hoss in the wooden area in the pasture in the spring.

(Taken on March 29, 2012.)

The minute he is let out in the pasture, he runs at full speed to her, and eats right next to her. They are inseparable.

The latest addition to the home is Phoenix Star, a hedgehog who was adopted on June 29th. It has been interesting to watch him during the last few months move from the baby-hedgehog stage to the adult-stage as he lost his baby quills and grew permanent ones in. Imagine teething...except all over your body. That's what happened to Phoenix.

Phoenix at about 8 weeks old.

(Taken on June 30, 2012.)

Through adoption, I have seen cats, dogs, horses, livestock, and a hedgehog all live peacefully together. Seeing them grow up and play together is a daily joy for me.

I can't imagine just having one cat...one dog...or one horse. Seeing how important companionship is to the pets here only makes me that much happier that they are part of a pet-filled home, and that each one gets to experience the love, care, and playfulness that another animal can bring to her/his life.

3 stars that don't shine in the Ryder Cup

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? No other trio of American golfers has qualified for more consecutive Ryder Cup teams than Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk. Collectively, they have won 146 official tournaments around the world, including 19 majors.

That only makes their Ryder Cup record look all the more inferior.

They have been the core of the U.S. team since 1997 at Valderrama, where they combined for a 3-6-1 record as the United States lost the cup. Perhaps it was a sign of what was to come. For all their individual achievement, none has a winning record in the Ryder Cup. They have been on six teams together ? Woods missed in 2008 at Valhalla while recovering from knee surgery ? and the only celebration they shared was that remarkable comeback at Brookline.

"I would have expected and definitely wished for a much better record than that," Furyk said Tuesday.

It leads to a question that brings to mind the chicken and the egg.

Do they all have losing records because they are playing on losing teams? Or does the U.S keep losing because this triumvirate has losing records?

"I think it's both," Woods said Tuesday. "In order to win cups, you have to earn points. And we certainly have not earned points. And on top of that, Phil, Jim and myself have been put out there a lot during those years. So if we're not earning points, it's hard to win Ryder Cups that way."

So much has been expected. So little has been delivered. And they are running out of time to leave a lasting impression.

Furyk is 42 and has gone four of the last five PGA Tour seasons without winning, though the exception was in 2010 when he won three times and was voted player of the year. Even so, he had to rely on being a captain's pick for the first time. Mickelson, also 42, has qualified for nine straight teams dating to 1995. He will set an American record for most Ryder Cups when the matches began Friday. Even so, he narrowly qualified for the team this year.

They will be leaned on heavily again at Medinah as the U.S. tries to win back the cup.

They Americans, dressed in navy blue shirts, headed out for the first full day of practice under warm sunshine in the Chicago suburbs. They played fourball matches among the three groups, which was evident when Bubba Watson and his pink-shafted driver drove through a dogleg on the 440-yard 11th hole and over the gallery's head. He still played that shot (and they won the hole).

U.S. captain Davis Love III finally showed his hand ? and confirmed some obvious pairings in mind ? by sending out Woods and Steve Stricker, Mickelson and Keegan Bradley, Watson and Webb Simpson. Other pairings were Matt Kuchar and Dustin Johnson, Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson, and Furyk and Brandt Snedeker.

There were few surprises on the European side.

European captain Jose Maria Olazabal had Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood in one group; Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Sergio Garcia and Paul Lawrie in another; and Mark Kaymer, Nicolas Colsaerts, Francesco Molinari and Peter Hanson in a third.

Furyk referred to McIlroy as a "marked man" last week, and not many could argue. The 23-year-old from Northern Ireland already is a two-time major champion, with both wins by eight shots. He has established himself as No. 1 in the world without debate, and has won three of his last six tournaments against the strongest field.

For so many years, Woods was that guy on the U.S. team, and that's why his record gets so much attention.

"I kind of liken it to playing premiership football, the biggest teams, the Manchester Uniteds, the Liverpools, the Chelseas, the Arsenals," McDowell said. "Any lesser team that comes to play these guys, they have a tendency to raise their game because it's a huge game for an underdog to play a Tiger Woods. And they get up for it. They are not expected to win. When expectation levels drop, game tends to improve. I think a guy who plays Tiger Woods, or a player of that caliber, he doesn't expect to win, so he lets it all go and he plays out of his skin and gets the upset."

Woods, despite his 86 wins and 14 majors, has never had a winning record in the Ryder Cup. He has combined to go 6-3-0 in his last two events to raise his career record to 13-14-2. Even at the height of his game, Europe would say that he could only win five points out of the 28 points up for grabs.

Woods never came close to that, which helps explain why Europe has won six of the seven Ryder Cups in which he played.

"Certainly, I am responsible for that because I didn't earn the points that I was put out there for," Woods said. "And that's part of being a team. I needed to go get my points for my team, and I didn't do that. Hopefully, I can do that this week. And hopefully, the other guys can do the same and we can get this thing rolling."

Mickelson began his Ryder Cup career in 1995 at Oak Hill, where he went 3-0 and privately burned that he wasn't used more often. That turned out to be the most points Mickelson contributed in a week.

Their contributions are so noticeable that Mickelson and Furyk are tied for losing the most fourball matches (eight) among American players. Furyk is 1-8-1 in fourballs, though there are pleasant Ryder Cup memories. He took down Nick Faldo in his debut at Valderrama, and it was his big win over Sergio Garcia at The Country Club in 1999 that was critical in the great American comeback.

None of this bothers Love, who played on only two winning teams and had a 9-12-5 record.

"Match play is just so different," he said. "I kind of throw the Jim Furyk or the Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods record of wins and losses out. ... There's a reason why these guys keep making teams, and I don't look a whole lot at the record."

That speaks to what they have done in their careers. They qualified for six straight teams from 1997 through 2008 (Woods would have led the Ryder Cup standings except for being injured). Woods was a captain's pick only once, in 2010. Mickelson has never been picked.

They have shown themselves as America's best over the last 15 years. Trouble is, Europe keeps going home with the trophy.

Rivalry and female relationships in shojo manga ? Shojo Corner

Posted in Gender Roles, Uncategorized tagged Absolute Boyfriend, His and Her Circumstances, Kare Kano, Kimi ni Todoke, Mars, Mars manga, Peach Girl, shojo, shoujo at 12:09 pm by starsamaria

I?ve been thinking a lot lately about the presence of rival female characters in shojo manga. In most shojo series, the protagonist is envied or outright bullied by another female. While this may ring true for many teenage girls in real life, in manga the cruelty these female antagonists display sends a particularly bad message about women in general. Not only do such characters suggest that women are typically catty or downright vicious,?but that there are no positive, loving relationships between women.?The latter is especially true?because often?in shojo manga the only other prominent female character besides the protagonist is her rival, which is probably why?I appreciate female friendships in shojo manga when they do show up.?Many shojo series present female fantasies ? like having the most popular guy in school fall for an average girl ? and it?s sad that the only role other females can play in these fantasies is that of the antagonist. Furthermore, the female rival is almost always more beautiful and ?perfect? than the protagonist?is, which sends the unfortunate message that women can?t be both beautiful and kind, and that women?who are?popular or desired by men are deserving of being hated.?Funnily enough, several other bloggers have also?been pondering the presence of the female rival, so I thought I?d share my thoughts of a few of the best, worst, and downright ugliest female rivals in shojo manga.

Mika Ito (Absolute Boyfriend)

At the beginning of Absolute Boyfriend, Mika is Riiko?s popular?best friend who helps her whenever she gets rejected by a guy. But not long after Riiko begins dating Night, a robot who is programmed to be the best lover, Mika reveals that she stole all the guys who Riiko liked and plans to do the same with Night. Riiko is devastated?to find out that Mika was only pretending to be her friend to make herself look better (since Riiko is ?plain?), and when Night fails to fall for Mika?s seductions, she is rarely heard from or seen again.?Mika is a pretty standard female rival because?the main reason she is?jealous of Riiko?revolves around a man. Furthermore, Mika isn?t given any real personality?- the most important function of her character is to create drama between Riiko and Night, the??more important? romantic relationship.?By having Mika try to steal her ?best friend?s? boyfriend, Absolute Boyfriend implicitly sends the message that not only are females not to?be trusted, but that they are only obstacles in getting the attention of men (and that men are the only ?goals? females seek to attain).

Harumi Sugihara (Mars)

When bad boy Rei Kashino and quiet artist Kira Aso start falling for each other at the beginning of Mars, Rei?s former fling Harumi is none too pleased. ?Harumi?s jealousy becomes so intense that she and a group of girls decide to kidnap Kira?so she?ll break up with Rei, or else?they?ll break her fingers. Kira refuses, but at the last second Harumi decides not to do it. Rei threatens?Harumi not to come near Kira again, and not long after Kira becomes friends with Harumi. While the friendship between Kira and Harumi?is highly unrealistic, because Harumi is the only other female character who is in the manga from beginning to end, we see no alternatives to female relationships, which is highly problematic. Although Harumi?s violent threats were treated as horrible, having her attempt to physically harm Kira suggests that females become completely irrational over men ? and this notion is?somewhat ?normalized? because Kira completely forgives her?Harumi for her vindictiveness?without ever addressing the issue.

Sae Kashiwagi (Peach Girl)

No list of female rivals would be complete without Sae. At the beginning of Peach Girl, Sae is Momo?s ?best friend,? with a tendency to gossip and copy Momo?s fashion sense. But when Sae finds out Momo has a crush on Toji,?a classmate from middle school, Sae does anything and everything to steal him away.?When Toji ends up in the hospital, Sae convinces her entire class not to tell Momo that he?s sick so she can visit him by herself (and so he can think Momo doesn?t care about him since she hadn?t visited him). Momo and Toji do break up temporarily, but before long they are back together and Sae ends up scheming again. She decides to trick Momo by slipping something in her drink, after which Momo wakes up in a hotel with a model who Sae is manipulating. Sae takes blackmail photos and uses them to get Toji to go out with her, which he miserably agrees to do. Once again, Peach Girl presents female rivals whose relationship only?revolves around men, but what?s interesting is that Sae isn?t even in love with Toji. Sae sends the message that females are obsessed with getting a guy ? any guy ? as a sign of their superiority over other females.?Sae is considered the ultimate bitch is shojo manga ? she has no redeeming qualities and the audience is made to hate her, which is unfortunately the fate of many female characters in the?media.?Sae?s machinations?also imply that women are incredibly shallow ? not only is Sae obsessed with taking down?Momo, but in being fawned over (she even briefly becomes a model to attain this goal).?Thus, Peach Girl sends the message that the only role women serve in each others? lives is to make each other miserable.

Ume Kurumizawa (Kimi ni Todoke)

Not long after realizing her own feelings for her popular classmate Kazehaya, Sawako soon discovers that another girl likes him: Kurumi. Kurumi?notices before anyone else does how Kazehaya looks at Sawako, and?she asks Sawako to give?up on him. Sawako refuses, but surprisingly the two?develop a sort-of friendship. Since both love Kazehaya they end up talking about their crushes,?and when?Sawako and Kazehaya?finally start dating each other?both she and the audience can?t help but feel sorry for?Kurumi. Because Kurumi isn?t outright cruel in her treatment of Sawako the way many other female rivals are, she comes across as sympathetic, especially since her feelings for Kazehaya were genuine. Furthermore, because Kimi ni Todoke highlights the friendship between Sawako, Yano, and Chizu, there is a range of female interactions and personalities that are presented beyond Kurumi?s character.?Thus, although Kurumi and Sawako?s relationship is initiated by their common interest of a man, Kimi ni Todoke takes a step in the right direction by fleshing out the female rival.

Maho Izawa (His and Her Circumstances)

His and Her Circumstances? protagonist Yukino is the smartest and most popular girl in school, to the envy of her classmate Maho. Like Yukino, Maho?has always?been the center of attention and loves being praised, and she convinces the other girls in her class to start ignoring Yukino so she can reclaim her throne.?Her plan fails, however, and soon Yukino helps her realize that there?s more to life than being number one ? like having good friends.?One thing I appreciate is that Maho?s rivalry with?Yukino is not about men at all. While her reasons for hating Yukino?(or actually, loving, since she wishes to be like Yukino) are still superficial, His and Her Circumstances at least shows how important it is to have close female friends by showing that Yukino was missing something from her life without them.?And unlike other female rivals who try to bring each other down, once Maho becomes friends with?Yukino they try to?help each other correct their old ways and start focusing on new goals, which is a refreshing change to?the sadly combative female dynamic that is typically shown not just in shojo manga, but in?media in general.

The female rival is a clich? that is insidious because it is?used in such misogynistic ways. It has become so common to have a ?bitchy? female character that it is easy not to even question why females in media are so consistently made to be hated. Yet not all female rivals come across as unsympathetic or feel like unnecessary plot devices.?What do you?guys think of the presence of?girls whose?only purpose is to?torment?the protagonist? And are there female rivals who you?ve liked or you felt served a purpose to the plot beyond creating drama? Share your thoughts, guys!
