Washington Republicans hold their presidential caucuses on Saturday, March 3 -- weeks after voters in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida cast their votes for a nominee.

But Kirby Wilbur, state GOP chairman, said Washington's caucuses should still matter.

"We are ninth in order, which puts us pretty close to the front order of things," he said. "And given that there are so many serious contenders, unless something happens and they all drop out between now and March 3, I think we'll be very relevant."

Washington Republicans will pick 43 delegates to the national convention, which will be held in Tampa in August.

Ron Paul, who came in third in the Iowa caucuses this week, maintains an active organization in Washington, and Wilbur said he expects other candidates to start organizing here as well.
