Boston marathon bombing survivor: Tom Brady?s got nothing on these ER doctors

Clowery is helped by first responders after the explosions. (Kenshin Okubo/AP)

Fifteen days ago, Jarrod Clowery was standing with three friends on Boylston Street in front of the Forum Bar watching the Boston Marathon.

Today, Clowery, a 35-year-old carpenter from nearby Stoneham, is in Boston?s Brigham and Women?s Hospital, recovering from shrapnel wounds and thermal injuries suffered near the second explosion. He's had multiple surgeries to remove carpentry nails, bee-bees, pieces of plastic and denim from his jeans embedded in him from the pressure cooker bomb that planted near the railing three feet from where he was standing. Doctors estimate Clowery will face several more surgeries to remove the 20 bee-bees left in him. Yet he considers himself lucky.

"I feel blessed," Clowery said Tuesday during a press conference at the hospital. "My friends are in much worse shape."

Each of Clowery's friends?brothers James and J.P. Norden and Marc Fucarile?lost limbs in the second blast.

Clowery and his friends can be seen standing near 19-year-old bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in one of the photos released by the FBI. But Clowery can't bring himself to look at his alleged attacker.

"I don't even look at the bomber," he said. "I look at me and my friends."

When he heard the first explosion, Clowery said, he knew it was not an accident.

"I knew right away in my gut in wasn't a gas leak," he said. "I saw the open space in the street, I said, 'Let's get in the street.'

As Clowery cleared the railing, he paused to urge his friends to follow him when the second bomb exploded.

"I remember feeling engulfed," he said. "Just like the movies--all the sound got taken away."

[Related: Fund launched to pay for physical therapy, counseling for Boston victims]

Clowery continued: "I remember trying to count my fingers and feel my feet. My hand was too much to look at."

He looked down at his legs. "I didn't want to look at them, either."

Two off-duty police officers picked Clowery up off the ground and carried him to an ambulance. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors said had suffered the worst burns of any victim they saw.

Clowery praised the first responders and emergency room doctors who treated him.

"In all my years in New England, I never seen Tom Brady put a drive together as good as what these people were doing," Clowery said, adding: "No disrespect to Tom Brady."

As for what he'd say to Tsarnaev given the chance, Clowery declined to answer. "[He's] gotten too much air time."

A fund has been set up by Clowery's family to help pay for his medical expenses.

Clowery, who is being transferred to a rehabilitation facility on Wednesday, hasn't decided if he'll go back to the marathon next year.

"I'm not scared to go back," he said. "I'm not scared of crowds. Maybe me and the same group of guys will go back down there."

(AP) ? Activists say Syrian government troops are clashing with rebels in a town outside Damascus, part of a belt of communities around the capital that have seen near-daily fighting in recent months.

Rebels have established footholds in neighborhoods on the edge of Damascus and in suburbs to the northeast and south. They hope to use these to storm the center of the city.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says Saturday's fighting is concentrated around the town of Al Otaybah, east of Damascus. The group also says the southeastern Damascus suburb of Jaramana has been hit by several mortar rounds.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Damascus is the seat of President Bashar Assad's power, and has been under his troops' control throughout the two-year conflict.

Protein maintains order in the nucleus

Friday, April 5, 2013

Two metres of DNA are packed into the cell nucleus, presumably based on a strictly defined arrangement. Researchers working with biologist Patrick Heun from the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg have now succeeded in explaining a phenomenon, which was first observed 40 years ago. The centromeres, namely the structures at the primary constriction of the X-shaped chromosomes, are clustered in a few specific locations in the cell nucleus. Using fruit flies as a model, the researchers have shown that a single protein plays a key role in this process. If this protein is missing, DNA damage in the cell increases and cell division is impaired

Each chromosome is duplicated before cell division. However, the two copies remain connected at a single site, the centromere, until shortly before division. This gives rise to the classical X-shaped structure of chromosomes. Over the past 40 years, dye experiments have shown that in many organisms and different cell types, the centromeres of several chromosomes are clustered in the nucleus. However, it is still little understood how the DNA is organized in the nucleus.

In a series of experiments using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, Patrick Heun and colleagues at the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics and associated with cluster of excellence BIOSS Centre for Biological Signalling Studies of the University of Freiburg, have now shown that the protein NLP plays a major role for centromere positioning. It binds specifically to the centromere region of the chromosomes and causes their clustering near the nucleolus, an important area of the nucleus. The site where the protein binds to the chromosome depends on the packaging of the DNA. As Heun and his team discovered, however, the DNA sequence at this site does not appear to matter. NLP also exists in a slightly modified form in humans and is known as nucleophosmin.

If the researchers eliminate the NLP protein using the so-called gene knockdown method, the centromeres fall apart and distribute themselves throughout the nucleus. Due to this change in the spatial architecture of the nucleus, silenced areas of DNA are activated and damage accumulates in the DNA double-strand. Such changes can impair the stability of the genome and ultimately contribute to the emergence of cancer. "It is already known that the organisation of the nucleus plays a role in a specific form of leukaemia. It would be very interesting to find out whether the lack of organisation of the centromeres also plays a role in cancer cells," says Heun.

In addition to the protein NLP, the scientists also succeeded in decoding the interactions with two other already known proteins. The nucleolus protein modulo anchors the complex consisting of the centromere and NLP to the nucleolus, and the protein CTCF supports NLP in the clustering of the centromeres.

"Regarding the molecular mechanism underlying this phenomenon, we now have a foot in the door," says Heun. He has been working on the elucidation of this process with his doctoral student Jan Padeken and his team since 2008. Other studies on Drosophila and mammalian cells, for example from mice, are now expected to follow. "We anticipate that other proteins are also involved in the organisation of the centromeres and would like to find out whether the discovered protein network also plays a role in other organisms," says Heun.

Scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics (MPI-IE) in Freiburg, which was established in 1961, study how the immune system developed down through evolution and how it changes over the course of life. In 2007, an "Epigenetic Focus" was additionally established at the institute. This involves the study of the inheritance of characteristics that are not based on changes in the DNA sequence.

PFT: Smith says slights on work ethic 'untrue'

2013 NFL CombineGetty Images

It didn?t take long for Geno Smith to hear about the rip job from Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Football Weekly, and it didn?t take long for a reaction.

After the report (from the same guy who lambasted Cam Newton for a ?fake smile?) which criticized Smith?s work ethic, Smith took exception to the unnamed sources cited.

?It?s untrue in all things,? Smith told Jim Corbett of USA Today. ?I heard about it [Monday] night when my quarterbacks coach called me to tell me about it.?

His old quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital, who now has Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M, said Smith is a student of the game.

?I was laughing with Geno about it Monday night and I said, ?Welcome to the business,?? Spavital said. ?I?ve been around Geno for two years. I thought he was one of the hardest-working quarterbacks I?ve ever been around.

?You have people who are about ?What can football do for me?? Geno is about ?What I can do for football?? If you take the game away from him, I think he dies. He is a dream come true for a coach.?

Of course, getting a former coach to defend for the record a player who has been criticized by an anonymous source isn?t hard.

Likewise, West Virginia wideout Stedman Bailey, who played with Smith in high school, scoffed at the report.

?I know first hand that Geno is one of the hardest working guys having watched how far he?s come over our years together,? Bailey said. ?He?s a leader, a hard-working guy, a film junkie. He has all the qualities you?d want in a franchise quarterback. Any one looking for that, Geno is your man.?

Apparently, Smith isn?t the kind of quarterback Nawrocki is looking for, and neither was Newton.

iPad: 3 years later

3 years ago today, Apple shipped the original iPad Wi-Fi. It had been called unimaginative. It had been called unnecessary. Even after Steve Jobs had taken the stage only a few months earlier and made the case that there was room for a new product category between the smartphone and the laptop, even after Apple's multitouch interface had mainstreamed computing like never before, it was called "just a big iPhone".

And it was. An iPhone gone IMAX. Widescreen experiences gone tall screen. Single column apps gone double column. Small device gone big.

If analysts didn't get it, if pundits didn't get it, if everyone inside Apple didn't get the full extent of it, it didn't matter. We got it. By the millions. Tens of millions. Eventually hundreds of millions.

Sure, there've been some bumps. Neither software nor services are optimized for multiple users yet, including families. Notifications aren't yet active and moving between apps, especially back to apps, isn't fast.

But overall the iPad made computing accessible to people for whom even Macs were confusing and intimidating, for whom mice and keyboards were awkward and off-putting, for whom multiple windows were frustrating and disorienting, for whom everything about a personal computers was still far too impersonal.

It empowered them.

Three years later, with the web in the palm of our hands, with games and videos that fill our field of vision, with apps that let us finger-paint with productivity and pinch and swipe and tap information around the world, with sizes both full and mini, the iPad is a success.

Undeniably, phenomenally, transformative-ly, confounding-ly a success.

And it's only been three years. How far can the iPad go in another three?
