Updated at 8:25 a.m. ET: KABUL, Afghanistan?-- Barack Obama has written a letter formally apologizing for the burning of copies of the Quran at a coalition military base in Afghanistan, the Afghan president's office said Thursday, amid reports that two American troops had been shot dead.

A man dressed as an Afghan government soldier killed the soldiers?and wounded four others during a protest about the burning of Islamic holy books that had been used by detainees held at the Bagram military base, a police officer and a provincial Afghan official told NBC News.

There have been violent protests every day since the news of the Quran desecrations emerged?on Tuesday in what has become a public relations disaster for foreign forces in Afghanistan.

A statement from President Hamid Karzai's office said the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan had delivered the letter from Obama Thursday.

In the letter, which is quoted in the statement, the U.S. president expresses his "deep regret for the reported incident" and offers his "sincere apologies."

According to the statement, Obama wrote: "The error was inadvertent; I assure you that we will take the appropriate steps to avoid any recurrence, to include holding accountable those responsible."

Riots triggered by the inadvertent Quran burning at a U.S. military base prompted the U.S. to lock down its embassy. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

The deputy police of Khogayani district in Nangarhar province, Haji Mohammad Hassan, told NBC News Thursday that American soldiers had starting firing at protesters who were attacking their base.

He said that an Afghan soldier then turned his weapon on them, shooting six, killing two and injuring four.

Hassan said the Afghan soldier escaped by joining the crowd of protesters, but a provincial official from Nangarhar province, who asked not to be named, said the shooter had been killed after the attack.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in a text message that they infiltrated the army with one of their fighters who?had shot and killed the Americans. Mujahid claims their fighter killed 10 Americans.

These elegantly written and nuanced reports, which became his trademark, offered a far more compelling and powerful insight into the realities of Iraq than the pedestrian daily accounts of the ebb and flow of the conflict.

His two Pulitzer Prizes for International Reporting, awarded in 2004 and 2010, were justly deserved.

A series of firsts

Anthony set a blistering pace in the competitive world of journalism. Even while he was busy racing between Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya to report on the startling developments of the Arab Spring, he still found time to scoop us all in his coverage of Syria. Performance
The 8200 Elite's Intel Core i7-2600S processor made quick work of our standard multimedia tests. It completed the PhotoShop CS5 test in a class leading 3 minutes 2 seconds and the Handbrake video encoder test a couple seconds off the leader at 1:18. For comparison, the HP TouchSmart 9300 Elite ($1,564 direct, 4 stars) (1:16 Handbrake, 3:14 CS5) and the Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 91z ($1,386 direct, 3.5 stars) (1:20 Handbrake, 3:03 CS5) were in the same ballpark, thanks to their similar Core i7 processors. The ThinkCentre has quite a bit more 3D prowess thanks to its AMD Radeon HD 6650A GPU, but the Intel HD Graphics 2000 in the HP is more than sufficient for business use.

The HP Compaq 8200 Elite is a decent system with a large 23-inch screen, but there are other choices that may make more sense. The HP 9300 is actually a better buy, since it is more ergonomic, and comes with slightly better performance, more memory, a larger hard drive, and a touch screen for about $300 less. The 8200 Elite does have a less expensive ($1,149) Core i5 model that's got a better bang for the buck, but the Core i7 model here is a bit pricey overall. The 8200 Elite is likely to fit better in your corporate structure than the HP 9300 Elite, thanks to 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi with 5GHz support and its three-year warranty. The Edge 91z is a smaller machine with a 21-inch screen and commensurate lower price tag ($1,286), but it's still competitive with the other systems on the benchmark tests. Ultimately the HP Compaq 8200 Elite All in One is a good choice if you've already rolled out other HP Compaq 8200 Elite desktops in your business, but ultimately there are other choices out there than this particular configuration.

The main proposal would slash the corporate tax rate to 28% from 35% and pay for the reduction by eliminating ?dozens? of business tax breaks. There are currently more than 130 on the books.

The Obama administration?s plan is in sync with Republicans in terms of wanting to lower the top rate. But Republicans want to lower the corporate rate even further to 25%.

There are also many other differences between their plans, and with Congress stuck in election-year gridlock, the odds of passage of any corporate tax reform plan this year are long.

Tax experts generally recommend that lawmakers lower the top rate to boost U.S. competitiveness. The United States has one of the highest nominal corporate tax rates in the world ? a factor that may reduce business investment.

Today, however, thanks to the bevy of tax breaks available to them, most of the largest corporations end up with effective tax rates far below 35%. Indeed, in many cases, they may pay far less than 25%.

The administration said a 28% U.S. corporate tax rate would be in line with the average rate among other advanced economies.

U.S. companies? abroad: A key goal of the administration?s plan is to discourage companies from moving their assets abroad and parking their profits there for years on end.

To that end, the administration wants to impose a new minimum tax rate on the foreign profits of U.S. multinational companies, although it did not offer a target for what that rate should be.

Currently, U.S. companies with foreign subsidiaries may reduce their federal tax bill in a variety of ways, including by deferring the federal tax they owe on their foreign-made profits until they bring that money back to U.S. shores.

By contrast, the administration?s proposal would require companies with foreign income in low-tax countries to pay the minimum U.S. tax rate on that income when it?s earned. If the company pays income tax to the host country on those profits, it will get a foreign tax credit.

For example, if the U.S. minimum tax rate is set at 20% and a company pays 8% to the host country, it will have to pay the 12% difference to Uncle Sam.

It?s not clear how profits that U.S. companies have kept abroad for years would be treated under the minimum-tax rule.

Obama?s plan would also remove the tax deduction for moving expenses that U.S. multinationals get when they move operations abroad. Conversely, U.S. multinationals that move operations back to the United States would get a 20% tax credit.

Manufacturers: The plan would seek to ensure that the effective tax rate paid by manufacturers does not exceed 25%. Currently, the average tax rate for manufacturers is 26%, according to senior administration officials.

A company?s effective tax rate is generally the net amount it pays in federal taxes as a percentage of its income.

The plan would reduce manufacturers? effective rate by reforming the deduction companies get for manufacturing goods in the United States. As the tax break is currently used, the term ?manufacturing? may be interpreted very broadly to include things like the making of fast food hamburgers.

The administration wants to increase the value of the deduction but focus it more narrowly on actual manufacturing.

It would also reform and make permanent the research and experimentation credit, which has been on the books for years but is still considered ?temporary.?

Likewise, it would make permanent and consolidate temporary tax incentives to invest in clean energy.

Small businesses: The administration says it wants to reduce and simplify taxes for small businesses, which devote nearly 2 billion hours and spend up to $16 billion on tax compliance, according to the Treasury Department.

Among other things, the president?s plan would let small businesses permanently write off up to $1 million in investments. It would also allow small businesses to use a simpler form of accounting than so-called accrual accounting, which requires them to recognize future cash receipts and costs on their income taxes.

Timing of reform: The last time the United States embarked on major tax reform was in 1986, when the economy, international trade and technologies were vastly different.

?The current tax code was written for a different economy in a different era. It needs to be reformed and modernized,? Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said on Wednesday.

He noted that the administration?s plan is intended ?to begin a process of building a bipartisan consensus? for tax reform. To that end, he said, he will be meeting with the chief tax writers in the House and Senate next week.

Indeed, given the lack of numbers and other specifics, the administration?s proposals can only be a starting point for discussion.

A top Republican lawmaker on tax issues, House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, welcomed the administration?s proposal, especially its call for lowering tax rates and closing loopholes. In the case of the fugitive, dubbed ESO 243-49 HLX-1, it's expected to eventually merge with the supermassive black hole at the center of its host galaxy.

A black hole is an object with gravity so strong that nothing can escape its grip, even when traveling at the speed of light. Astronomers have found convincing evidence that black holes, which form from the collapse of individual stars, exist. They've also found convincing evidence that supermassive black holes exist in the hearts of galaxies.

But questions remain about whether?intermediate-mass black holes exist, let alone about how they formed, notes Mathieu Servillat, an astrophysicist and member of the team reporting the results in the journal Astrophysical Review Letters.

Although the team has been studying HLX-1 as if it were an intermediate-mass black hole, astronomers have yet to agree on any candidate as the real deal. In the past eight years, two other groups have each identified a candidate. But the evidence for each failed to convince other researchers.

?If intermediate black holes exist, they would have an impact at different stages of the evolution of the universe,? says?Dr. Servillat, a researcher at France's National Center for Space Studies. ?At the very beginning, you have to form intermediate-mass black holes. Is this a giant star that is collapsing? Is this a number of stellar-mass black holes accumulating to become an intermediate black hole??

How does modesty keep us living longer? First what is modesty?

?

So what is modesty? There is a seemingly cute but exceedingly wise statement in the Talmud?Bavli?Tractate?Eruvin 100b ?"If the Torah had not been given, we would have learned tzni'ut (modesty) from a cat."

While traditional Judaism places emphasis on modesty as in the way one dresses , or relates to the opposite sex, tzni'ut, in?this study of derek eretz, refers to humility.?

?Moses ?is referred to as "exceedingly humble, more than any man in the world" (Num.12:3). The Talmud states that humility is one of the desired?characteristic traits of the Jewish people (Bavli Tractate Yevomot ?79a). Humility is a sign of Godly strength and purpose, not weakness. "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble" (Proverbs 3:34). Humility allows us to understand that we are all connected? with notions of transcendent unity with the universe or the Divine, and of becoming egoless.

The rabbis teach that the man who thinks he can live without others is mistaken; the one who thinks others can't live without him is even more deluded.?Hence humility is a desirable trait because it creates in us the capacity to truly love God and our fellows.?

It is our ego that separates us from God and our fellows. If we have a resentment towards someone, chances are, the Talmud teaches, as well as psychiatrists, that we see in that person a defect of character, that we have. We would rather shun or hold a grudge to that person, than work on that defect in ourselves.

"I stood between God and you" (Deuteronomy 5:5). Moses?is telling Israel that he was an?intermediary between God and them at Sinai.

But let us?look at the verse literally. "I'' (ego) actually is a barrier, that?stands between, God and us.

Anochi is the Hebrew word used for 'I."

While God wants us to have a healthy self esteem, that is earned by doing His will, God does not appreciate fake humility, self anointment,?and vanity.? "A vain person is one I cannot bear" (Psalms 101:5).

Jacob?said to Isaac when he was pretending he was Esau: ?"It is I, Esau your firstborn" (Genesis 27:19).?? Anochi was used here.

The sages teach that the idea of wanting to be the "big man" , being an "I," is a trait of Esau. Esau is not one of our seven shepherds, ushpizin, who visited us?in our Sukkot .

So we can see that not being modest with over-the-top ego, can set us apart from our fellows and spirituality, with all kinds of stressful problems ensuing. And since we know that continual stress can take years off of our lives, we can understand why the sages teach that modesty ensures longevity.

''?Love the pious, in order that you may be saved from the black angel.'' What is the black angel? It is not outside of us. It is our yetzer ha ra, our inclination to ignore what is good behaviorally. The sages even let us know that God has a yetzer ha ra, and they define it as Satan.

When we love and hence spend much time with pious? spiritual people, we learn their ways. Rather than reading derek eretz, we see it practiced. It is easy to read to ignore wrongs done to us, but hard to learn how to do. When we see?a spiritual person actually live this way,?we?truly learn.?By spending time with spiritual folk who actual live what they teach, is another level of teaching us, so that it keeps us spiritually fit.

"Be careful in the reading of Shema, and prayer in general, in order that you be saved from Gehenna.'' When the Talmud discusses the?Shema in Tractate Berachot, the rabbis are not just referring to the "Hear oh Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One,'' but to all the paragraphs that come after it, that many call the "V'Ahavtah", aka "You shall love the Lord your God..."

Truly understanding and believing the first sentence, put our lives into perspective. The rest of the verses is a check list for us. Are we really loving? God and our fellows...at home, on the road, in work, etc? This questioning ourselves when praying? is Tephila, the Hebrew word for prayer, but meaning self judgement.

Tephila, are self-judging prayers. As King David said in Psalm 16:07: "I bless God who is my counselor, but in the night, my inmost self instructs me." We will start off a prayer of tephila , which is the prayer that the entire Talmud begins to study in its first Tractate, Beracoth.? Judge yourself with the Shema:

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Sh'ma Yis'ra'eil Adonai Eloheinu Adonai echad.

Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One.

In an undertone:

Barukh sheim k'vod malkhuto l'olam va'ed.

Blessed be the Name of His glorious kingdom forever and ever.

V'ahav'ta eit Adonai Elohekha b'khol l'vav'kha uv'khol naf'sh'kha uv'khol m'odekha.

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Ask yourself, are you really doing the mitzvoth, the duties of the heart of loving God with all your heart, with all of your soul and with all your might? Do you sincerely try to do what is right and just while at home, at work, and on the street? Are you letting your eyes go astray and worshipping other gods, like the god of money, or the god of lust, or the god of ego? Do you try to keep God in your conscience throughout the day? Do your actions make you a good teacher to others?

The above is the way to say the prayer with kavenah. Saying it aloud with fellow congregants as if it were a mantra or some pledge of Jewish allegiance is not kavenah.?? Maimonides (in the Guide for the Perplexed, Part 3, Chapter 51) expresses this point directly: "Do not pray moving your lips with your face to the wall (as if you are engaged deeply in prayer) and all the while you are thinking of your business transactions . . . Do not think you have achieved anything (by doing these things)." My best prayers are not communal, but at home, in quiet, where God can hear me and I can hear Him.

You can say your tephila prayers silently if you wish. Psalm 65:2 says: "To You silence is praise." Each morning, you should consider the day ahead. If you know, for example, that you have a company office party to attend and the sin of gossip (lashon ha ra) is on your chesbon ha nefesh gadol, ask yourself how well you have been avoiding this defect and ask God to help you avoid this defect when you attend the party.

Speaking of gossip, the Chofetz Chaim, Rabbi I. Kagen teaches that lashon ha ra murders not only the subject of the gossip, but the one who gossips and those who listen as well. We have a prayer specifically for this sin in Talmud Tractate Beracoth 16b-17a: "May God guard my tongue from evil and my lips from speaking guile." This is also found is Psalm 34:14.

If ego and showing off are character defects of yours, ask God to "let your name be like dust to everyone." The less you concern yourself with prestige, the less you will let selfishness interfere with your service to God, to your fellows, and to daily spiritual growth and self-improvement. You will also be able to ignore barbs, snubs and insults from others, as they will mean nothing to you.

Remember, prayer is a lifelong process. You will find that the practice evolves over time. As you learn the prayers, you will find some that you like and stay with them. Others, you may not like as much and choose to not say them. This is fine, so long as you are saying your prayers with kavenah. You can pick prayers that you like from our prayer books, or from the TaNaK, especially psalms, or even other spiritual texts.

By continually self judging and striving to do better will keep us from having a life that is hell, Gehenna, on Earth.

We have almost all heard and seen at Passover when we go to the door of our homes in the beginning of the Seder, and say in Aramaic, "Let those who are hungry, let them come and eat."

Many think this is just what Jews say once a year at a seder. The Talmud?Bavli Tractate Ta'anit 20b?teaches that Rabbi??? Huna would open his door and announce: "Whoever is needy, let him come and eat."? Rabbi announced this every day.

(This is the same Rabbi Huna, who in Tractate Kiddushin stated that ''one should not walk six feet with out a?kippah on his head.'')

As we have learned Tsadakkah is the salt, the preservative, for our own wealth and well being.

?"A man saw not his fellow, neither rose any from his place for three days" (the Plague of Darkness, Exodus 10:23). Indeed, there is no greater darkness than one in which "a man saw not his fellow" -- in which a person becomes oblivious to the needs of his fellow man. When that happens, a person becomes stymied in his personal development as well -- "neither rose any from his place." This was taught by?Rabbi Yitzchak Meir of Ger (1789-1866)

Our doors should always be open and never shut to those in need. Neither should our hearts and wallets. When we get so jaded in life that we can ignore ?the plight of others, and call those that do care, 'socialists or wealth redistributers,' we are only harming our own souls and our own wealth, even though we think foolishly that we are protecting it.
